Julia Glass can write.

Her characters are finely drawn, and the plot of her novel describes a deep, pleasing arc, tightly woven as a lightship basket.

In each of the three sections of the book, one becomes so immersed in that character's point-of-view that facing the shift to the next one makes the reader fear the best part is over. Not to worry. Within a page or two, we become comfortably enmeshed in the new character's point-of-view, and masterfully are drawn into his/her world.

So much that is sad pervades the book that one is surprised to come away from it with such a positive impression. Yes thre is sorrow, and all our strivings end in death, but there is bravery, and effort, and family, and new life always.

Recommended.
