"The story of a dispossessed community, driven from its bit of land in Oklahoma by the implacable march of industrial progress. The big corporations which own the land the 'squatters' occupy decide that the time has come to mechanise agriculture - and so the bulldozers demolish overnight the small-holdings and cabins that represent so many years of hope and labour. Like their fathers before them, these displaced citizens of America set out on the migrant trail to the West, but not, alas, to find a land of plenty in the 'Golden West'."

I'm sooo sorry that this has taken such a long time for me to read. It was quite heavy book to read and I've had a lot of things going on with my life at the same time. But I'm glad I got through it since I really liked the book. Even though it was a tough to read I really wanted to finish it. Which I eventually did.

Well, I'll get the book on its way as soon as I get the next person's address.

Came in the mail today. I just finished reading East of Eden over the weekend, which was my first Steinbeck book, and I really liked it. Back later!

I think I enjoyed this book better than East of Eden, though I don't know if "enjoyed" is the right word to use for such a depressing book! The stark reality of life in the Joads' time makes me so greatful I live in the thriving Oklahoma of today! Yes, it was a heavy read, but at times the descriptive narrative just flows.

After having checked with SquirrelNutkin, who gave me free rein, I'm going to offer this book in the forums. Unfortunately it's a little worse for wear, I tried to handle the pages very gingerly but by the time I reached the end a few had come loose from the binding. However, it's still readable for someone who is willing to give it a go.

This book is now on it's way to Gwenifar, who wants it in spite of it's delicate condition!
