Afghanistan, Where God Only Comes to Weep
5 journalers for this copy...
Shirin-Gol was just a young girl when the Russians invaded her country and bombed her village in 1979. After her brothers joined the resistance, Shiran-Gol and the remains of her family fled to the capital, Kabul, and began a life of struggle in their war-torn country. Shirin-Gol's story is told by writer and filmmaker Shiba Shakib, this is a story of so many Afghan women, a story of rape, enforced prostitution to feed a family, and attempted suicide. BUT is also a story of courage, human kindness, female friendship and love.
Was not as good as I thought/hoped it was going to be - readable and shocking in content that people could live like that in today's world - but not unputdownable :)

Received in the mail yesterday as part of a trade. Looks interesting! Many thanks...and thanks for the Tim-Tams too! I am not sure where their BCID's are so I don't know how to journal them! LOL!!
An eay to read portrayal of the shocking affects of the war in Afghanistan. It traces the life of Shirin-Gol from her birth until her early days as a grandmother and describes the role of women in this Muslim country and the affects of war between the people and the Russians, and once they have been driven out, the fighting between different warlords, then the rise of the Taliban and the imposition of even stricter controls on women's lives. The war forces Shirin-Gol and her husband, Morad, who is addicted to opium, to flee many times and they end up as refugess in Iran for a number of years. If only this were a fictional story! If only the horrors in this account were only made up. Sadly however it is true....and many people today still suffer as a result of war in this region.
THANKS again to previous custodians of this book - it's been a fascinating read. The author has a unique style of writing which takes a little getting used to but overall it's a good read. Not sure who I will pass it onto next...stay tuned! :-)

Wow, looks like this book has had a life already - picked up at the Adelaide Meet-up, looking forward to it.
Apologies for having kept this for so long - the joys of (at the time) being a new member and getting carried away! I have just finished reading this and am shocked. I did not know much about Afghanistan and the actual day to day life and struggle of people, and even more, women. An eye opener that probably could have been told a little bit better but certainly serves as a reminder of what is happening in our world.
I think I will use this in the virtual first sentences bookbox as the topic is off such wide appeal. Thanks for sharing with me.
