The sequel to THE POWER OF ONE...
Half Indian, half African and beautiful, Tandia is just a teenager when is is brutally attacked and violated by the South African police.
Desperately afraid, consumed by hatred for the white man, Tandia at last finds refuge in a brothel deep in the veldt. There, she learns to use her brilliant mind and extraordianry looks as weapons for the battles that lie ahead: she trains as a terrorist.
Then Tandia meets a man with a past as strange as her own. An Oxford undergraduate, Peekay is also the challenger for the worldd welterweight boxing championship - and a white man. And in a land where mixed relationships are outlawed, their growing love can only have the most explosive consequences...

I can not decide if "Tandia" is a better book than "The Power of One". Though they both feature Peekay, the stories are so different but at the same time woven together so beautifully. Through Bryce Courtenay's writing, the reader is brought into South Africa once again, a world of racial segregation and hate, but at the same time, a nation of love and companionship. This masterpiece of literature is not a story of white versus black but of justice versus injustice, love versus hate, and the fight for the good of mankind. The images of good and evil are clearly visible from the first page to the last.
I suppose that, at least from my point of view, that "The Power of One" and "Tandia" can not be viewed as separate books but as one large story, with a small intermission in between. The time frame linking the two novels is negligible with a few hundred pages of "Tandia" devoted solely to the title character herself. Then Courtenay brings the two characters together masterfully.
"The Power of One" and "Tandia" will undoubtedly remain my favorite novels for quite a long time, as I can see no other book grabbing my emotions and taking them on a wild adventure like these did.

Thanks to a heavy courseload (one class is Literature, with 20 books to read this semester!) I am not making any progress on this book. I have only had one chance to sit down and read it, and if the first book is any judge, this book needs my time and attention. So, I am mailing it on to roadrunner today, with hopes that I'll get to see it again when I can actually *read* it! Thanks so much for sharing this book with me!
This arrived yesterday. This is my first package that has ever been opened and inspected by customs. They did re-seal it quite nicely, though. I have one book in front of this one but I should get to it shortly.
I've FINALLY finished this book. I have mixed feelings (opinions?) about this book. I had such a hard time sticking with it and feel things didn't really pick up until about 600 pages in. I got bored with all of the boxing which seemed to take up most of the first 3/4 of the book. The descriptions of Africa were wonderful, just like they were in The Power of One. All of the information about apartheid was very interesting. I just couldn't quite get into the story. I do really like the way that Courtenay writes and I will continue to keep my eye out for more of his books. Thanks so much Taniazed for sharing this. This will leave tomorrow via Media Mail to GrammarBroad.
Wow! An autographed copy, no less! Looking forward to reading it. Thanks!
