There's just one problem. Business, to put it mildly, stinks. So when the police bring him in to consult on a grisly double murder committed with black magic, Harry's seeing dollar signs. But where there's magic, there's a black mage behind it. And now that mage knows Harry's name. And that's when things start to get... interesting.

Magic. It can get a guy killed.


This is the first of 6 books so far in the Dresden Files series and each one keeps getting better. Jim also has a new series called "Codex Alera" with the first book "Furies of Calderon" coming out Oct. 5, 2004.

I opened my mailbox today and there was a storm inside! This looks really good--I'm glad I signed up for this ring! :)

I liked this one! I want to say that it was really cute, but I doubt Harry would appreciate it! Maybe it says something about me that I'd even consider a book involving murder, the mafia, demons, and giant ensorcelled bugs cute, but the cuteness part is in the details. Things like Harry in his sub-basement wearing his bathrobe over his clothes, explaining that wizards really wear robes because it's so darn chilly. And how every mechanical device in the area goes berzerk when Harry's around. I loved that he's not just an all-powerful he-man character who can do no wrong. And I'd better stop there before I give away too much of the plot!

The book picked up pace more and more as it went along. Somewhere aroung 2/3 of the way through, I just gave in and stayed up until I finished!
