Possessing the Secret of Joy

By the author of The Color Purple. Tackles the subject of misogyny. Reviews were excellent.
I believe that there isn't a woman alive who can read this book and not be deeply disturbed by the subject matter...yet, like watching a disaster newscast on CNN, it's almost impossible to stop yourself from watching--in this case from reading--no matter how distressing it is. Black women, especially tribal African women, carry so much in their souls...I can't even begin to understand the depth of the pain experienced over the generations. The worst of this is when women are subjected to horrors at the hands of other women...here is a bit from page 224:
"an uncircumsicsed woman is unclean...A proper woman must be cut and sewn to fit only her husband, whose pleasure depends on an opening it might take months, even years, to enlarge. Men enjoy the struggle..."
We see how this ritual destroys the mind of Tashi and those who love her. I will never completely get this book out of my mind.
Unbelievably well-written novel.

Just received this in the post from the incomporable Hot Flash, I challenged hotflash to shock me, as I have been rarely revolted by a book, but just a chapter or two into the painful journey Miss Walker soldiers you through step by step I see that hotflash was very adept at how affirming each word in this book will be, I am grateful to receive this, it is a humbling experience already. cheers so much hotflash , this was bang on!! BOWIE FOLLIES VERRA JONES :)
My first book received and what an initiation!!
To say Miss Walker summons you into the agonising kaleidoscope she has presented you with in master lexicon and living, breathing words would be undermining the paperback genius of her lament. An exploitation warrrior, Alice Walker has graced 281 pages of proseful, provoking reality. What is emanated here is a bonafide rapture~replete with all elements that evoke man, woman and skeptic into its formidible spell. I cannot recall in the several lustrums of mine life, being so subservient at moments, helpless and apathetic to the subconscious chains that this writer binds us with. A humbling journey, coercing my own self-reflection and atonements. How each word affirms..they dance the danse macabre, but yet they dance..There is always triumph in an Alice Walker travesty. For in her world, no matter how battered, bruised and beaten, its inhabitants are never truly left defeated. This is one of the most powerful and painful reads I have encompassed. It is the archetypal "White Goddess," for this book is haunted. - by Verra Jones 12/9/05
