Sick Puppy

I've heard a lot about this author--I'm looking forward to reading soon.
This is the first Carl Hiaasen book that I have read. While I did find it kind of amusing, I was not as impressed as I could have been. I'm really surprised that I didn't like this more. I had heard so much about how great his books are.... I usually like sick and twisted humor and ironic situations--not sure why my reaction is luke-warm. I'll probably try one more of his sometime to see if this one just wasn't as good.
published 1999
From the back: An eco-terrorist with a trust fund, Twilly Spree is tailing a litterbug in a purple Range Rover with plates that read COJONES. Before he knows it Spree is up to his cojones in corrupt Florida politicos and some very sick puppies, including a Toyota salesman turned governor, a Republicans-only hooker, and a millionaire developer with a fetish for Barbies. But when Spree learns that the fate of an unspoiled island is at stake, he's determined not to be outdone. While defending the toads of Toad Island--not to mention one cheerfully oblivious Labrador--he'll steal a man's wife, gouge out the eyes of big gamer trophies, and even risk his life two or three times in this, Hiaasen's most gleeful muckracking story yet.

OMG!! I *ab-sol-ute-ly* LOVED this book!! Having lived in Florida for 2 decades, I canNOT believe I haven't come across this funny and original novelist before now. I will most certainly track down others, now that I know what I've been missing!
Chalk full of outrageous characters and improbable situations, this hilarious story captures the essence of Florida's greedy land developers ("more, more, more") and ridiculous politics to a tee! A wonderfully constructed tale, filled with unforgetable, unique characters (Gotta love McGuinn and Twilly, but I think Governor Captain Skink is my new hero!) and a storyline that was intoxicating, from the first over-the-top 'hunting expedition', to the happy and satisfying ending; I loved every minute of it!!
(I think I'm gonna try to get the other-half to read & journal this one - let him see what I've been giggling about these past few days)
