I saw 'Pulitzer-Prize-Winning' and bought it, but it turns out that to win a Pulitzer you just have to be brutal and/or depressing. This book is allegedly imbued with humour and compassion, but I must have missed that part - all I got out of it was astonishment at the poverty-stricken absurdity of it. They might have stopped breeding, or drinking, or smoking, and gotten through life with a few more smiles every year. If it turns out that I've just missed the point, I hope that somebody lets me know.
