The final book in Susan Cooper's tremendous "The Dark is Rising Sequence." In my books Cooper ranks with Lewis, above Rowling, and slightly below Tolkein as a fantasy author. Despite the honours won by the previous book in the series, _The Grey King_, Cooper is not as well-known as she deserves. I'll still be reading this series when I'm eighty.
