This was an enjoyable read. I can see why this book was so popular.

From amazon.com:
This first novel in Alexander McCall Smith’s widely acclaimed The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series tells the story of the delightfully cunning and enormously engaging Precious Ramotswe, who is drawn to her profession to “help people with problems in their lives.” Immediately upon setting up shop in a small storefront in Gaborone, she is hired to track down a missing husband, uncover a con man, and follow a wayward daughter. But the case that tugs at her heart, and lands her in danger, is a missing eleven-year-old boy, who may have been snatched by witchdoctors.

This book was like a little breath of fresh air. I enjoyed it and found it quite a departure from the typical mystery genre offerings. Mma Ramotswe's "cases" read like little experiments in psychology -- unexpected and unique in their approach. Her manipulations of various characters to get whatever information she needed were deft, subtle, charming and even bold. I liked her character development. Rather that present Mma Ramotswe as possessing perfect judgment and relations, her flawed past made her very compelling and sympathetic. The world needs more books like these, and I look forward to reading the subsequent books in the series. Thank you so much, jenvince, for sharing this -- I'd never have read it otherwise!

On its way to Lpree!

I really enjoyed this and, as someone else said, I wouldn't have read this if it wasn't offered as a bookring. I definitely want to read others in the series.

I just finished this book - this was a much better story than I was expecting. I'm not really sure what I was expecting, actually. I kept seeing this book mentioned here and there, but did not know much about it. I thought this was a great story about a female detective in Botswana and the people she encounters as she solves various cases. It was a bit slow to start, but the second half went very quickly - I was really anxious to see how the one case turned out. I think this book is unique to any others that I've read, simply from a location standpoint. I found the setting & culture aspects to be really interesting.

Anyway, I will certainly keep an eye out now for other opportunities to read books in this series! Oh yeah, one little annoyance - the entire book I kept wondering how to pronounce "Mma" - is it an abbreviation or a word on its own? It was a distraction - I wish the author had included some pronunciation guide at least for that one word. Oh well, it's a good excuse to go searching the Internet.

I will PM the next person on the list and hope to mail this out later this week. Thanks very much to jenvince for the opportunity to check this book out!

UPDATE 10/18 - nekki2976 asked to be skipped, so this book was sent surface mail to deebookfairy today.

I really enjoyed this book. Not a great literary work of art or a great crime thriller, but all the same there is something endearing and engaging about it that just makes you love the main character and want to read on.
