This book is described as "an utterly contemporary novel which goes straight to the heart of the way we live now", but then the person who wrote that is probably living the same media/publishing/celebrity life as the characters in this book and oh-so-many other yawningly predictable books. It certainly doesn't go to the heart of how I, or any of my friends or acquaintances live now (and I'm the same generation as the protagonists). I quite enjoyed the first part of the book, it had promise, but then it deteriorated into the absurd. Check out the headmistress of the primary school who calls the mother in to give advice on marital breakdown (hmmm, yes, very lifelike)... the tediously predictable realisation of Jacks that, oops, the drug snorting glamour boy isn't quite the man for her and that she really loves the gardener after all... and then are we really supposed to rejoice in the arch-materialism of Amanda... hurrah!! the family is going to uproot to New York!
