I read this in one day whilst travelling to and from Sheffield. It tells the story of the early years of Novalis and his search for some sort of meaning in life. He meets and falls in love with Sophie, a 12-year-old girl who seemingly loves him back and they agree to marry, much to the amusement of his friends and the consternation of his family. The story is, I think, more Sophie's than Fritz's but it is a moving story nonetheless.
