This is the oldest of the books Ottawabill just sent me, but it’s in fine condition. Unusually good paper for a paperback, and the binding’s intact. Looks like an interesting primary source for the history of the ante-bellum South. Hope to find many more interested readers down here in Dixie.
I've been getting a little use out of this volume during my seminar this spring on "Southern industrialization." Olmsted is one of the classic sources for the dominant vision of the ante-bellum American South as a backward land inimical to progress. Some historians dispute that: Seen in a global context, it was one of the "modernest" regions.
This book has been mooched by a reader in Louisiana. I’ll be putting it in the mail this week.
