Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress : A Novel

TBR. The book has some rave reviews.
This little book packs quite a tale so don't be fooled by its size.
The setting is China during the Cultural Revolution . Two city boys of denounced parents are sent to Mt. Phoenix, a remote mountain village, for "re-education", which essentially meant dropping their intellect in favor of hard work and living with very basic amenities. Books and other writing materials were banned and so you can imagine the young men's joy when they discovered a stash of banned works in a house in the mountain. They devour them in secret, sometimes writing verses and passages from these books on the lining of their jackets so that they could be constantly in touch with the written word.
This book left me with a profound sense of how lucky we are to be surrounded by books. I think if books were taken from me, I would die of a broken heart.
