Note that my copy of this book has a 1961 copyright, an apparently unregistered ISBN, and has different cover art than what is displayed above.

I first purchased Irving Stone's "The Agony and the Ecstasy" (the life of Michelangelo), which languished on my bookshelf for months. Then later, I found "Lust for Life" at a used bookstore and decided I ought to read it first, since it's Stone's first novel.

"Lust for Life" is the biographical novel of the life of Vincent Van Gogh. Despite some of the dialogue being fictional, as well as some minor details, the novel itself is factual--based on a very real collection of Vincent's letters that were written to his brother, Theo. Lust for Life literally reads as a novel (as it was intended to be.) By the time I finished, I felt as if I knew Vincent personally--and his intense and often tragic life. I very much would like to visit the hill at Auvers at least once in my life.

Amazing book. The writing was well done. An interesting life and I understand why doctor's try to figure out what happened to Vincent's mind.
There were some choices Vincent made that made me cringe, but for the most part, Stone wrote the information without being too detailed making a disgusting situation too vulgar.
And because Stone did such a great job weaving Vincent's life in this historical fiction, I had to look up Vincent's art work and view the evolution of his paintings.
If anyone is remotely interested in art and/or Vincent, I'd recommend this book.
