This book was a disapointment!
Peter Carey has done much better before: the characters don´t ring tue and the plot is far fetched and clumsy.

In Melbourne in the late 1940s, a young conservative poet named Christopher Chubb decides to teach his country a lesson about pretension and authenticity. But over the ensuing years, his audacious act of literary ventriloquism takes on a much darker resonance.

A thoroughly enjoyable read though the ending seems a little rushed and the lack of speech marks can be slightly distracting to begin with.

Thanks very much Aquina.

To be sent to Fire-Dragon

This arrived as a RABCK from Reetpetite on Friday. I was going away to Avignon for the weekend and as I am currently reading Mr Norrell and Jonathan Strange by Susanna Clarke in an enormous hardback volume, I decided to take the much more portable and friendly-looking My Life as a Fake. For me, it wasn't at all disappointing; it was highly entertaining. I guess, upon reflection, some elements of the plot are a little far-fetched but it didn't feel so at the time; all disbelief was suspended and I was swept along by the story.

As an Australian, I found it interesting to read his quite acerbic observations of the Australian literary scene. It's no accident that Carey, although he predominantly writes about Australia, has lived in New York for many years and is unlikely to ever return home. I hadn't heard about the Ern Malley hoax (which this is based on) until I read the book reviews of My Life as a Fake but those aspects of the novel certainly ring true.

The novel had a lovely tension because even as I was drawn into Chubb's story - or supposed story - I also felt the narrator's frustration at being forced to endure listening to this man's life history when all that she really wanted was the poetry.

Thank you Aquina for sharing and to Reetpetite for sending it on to me. I think my boyfriend may be going to read this next but after that it is available to any BookCrossers who may want it.

Yes - quite enjoyed this - liked the setting and the plot but must have missed something vital along the way as I didn't get the point of the title.
