I bought this book at an antique store some blocks from home which also sells a lot of second hand stuff that is not necessarily antique. Like this book. I haven't read it yet. I don't know if I will read it before releasing it in the wild. I have too many books that I really want to read in line and almost nothing of space. Still, I may read it. It won the Pulitzer. As I have said before, I respect that prize.

I didn't plan to read this book, but someone from England asked me for it. I browsed through it and saw it could be a fast read, so I could read it before sending it but still not delay its arrival. I can't believe I hadn't read it before. Of course, I didn't know what I was missing, I can't guess that much. The point is, the book is great. Excellent plot; I love complicated ones in which a lot of people have mutual aqcuaintances without their even knowing. A lot of interlaced characters. Wonderful story. I am off to rent the movie. I remember watching it when I was little, maybe twice, but I want to enjoy it now, after reading the novel and while being an adult. I don't expect it to be as sexually explicit as the novel, though. Now I am going to send it without any feeling of guilt for giving away a book without having enjoyed it.

Hia, as you'll have guessed from my profile, I love the deep South, so am looking forward to reading this one. Thankyou for sharing! More when read...

Journal Entry 5 by Hellie from South Shields, Tyne and Wear United Kingdom on Monday, April 11, 2005
So..why did it take me so long to read this book?

I worried the style would be hard to read - instead of chapters each part is a letter from Celie to God.
Instead it made it feel like youwere reading Celie's personal thoughts.
Set in the seep South during a very turbulent time, I enjoyed both the hostirical and southern implications of this book as well as the story itself.
It is beautifully written.
Possibly my favourite quotes are:
"What the world got to do with anything, I think. Then I see myself sitting there quilting tween Shug Avery and Mr. ______. Us three set together gainst Tobias and his fly speck box of chocolate. For the first time in my life, I feel just right." Part 2, pg. 61

"First time somebody made something and name it after me." Part 2, pg. 75

"White folks is a miracle of affliction, say Sofia." Part 3, pg. 103
"I think us here to wonder, myself. To wonder. To ast. And that in wondering bout the big things and asting bout the big things you learn about the little ones, almost by accident. But you never know noting more about the big things than you start out with. The more I wonder, he say, the more I love."Part 5, pg. 247
