What a happy surprise this book was. I read Hornby's "About a Boy" and didn't like it. There wasn't a thing wrong with his writing style, but I found the main character so unappealing that I couldn't enjoy the book. It didn't make me want to run right out and buy another of Hornby's works. But the wonderful thing about BC is that it gives me the chance to try books I might otherwise have passed up. "How to Be Good" is an excellent example. The style is light and breezy - a fun read, but the theme is serious. If one is trying to lead a "good" life...how good is good? And what is good enough?. Here's a quote from the book which I think captures the theme. The main character has a dream about all the bad people in the world suddenly changing to good overnight.
"The dream scares me. Because I need these people - they serve as my compass. Due south there are saints and nurses and teachers in inner-city schools; due north there are managing directors of tobacco companies and angry local newspaper columnists. Please don't take my due north away, because then I will be adrift, lost in a land where the things I have done and the things I haven't done really mean something."
I thoroughly enjoyed this thought-provoking, entertaining book.

Thanks for the trade fsr44! I look forward to reading this one.
What a wonderful book! The humor was sometimes biting and sarcastic, and at other times I found myself laughing out loud at the utter ridiculousness of the situations (for example: GoodNews' "jumping up and down" telephone conversation with his sister!).
Thanks so much for sharing this one, fsr44. I look forward to reading all of Hornby's books!
