The story is set in England during the Great Plague of 1666. It tells of a village which quarantines itself to stem the spread of the deadly infection and the effects of isolation on the people of the village. Based on a real event , the village of Eyam still exists. It is compellingly written with an interesting collection of characters - a good read!

Journal Entry 4 by thebookchooks from Newcastle, New South Wales Australia on Friday, September 3, 2004
Caught the book on a chair outside the Lovette Gallery in the Newcastle Region Library on Wed 1st Sept. It is the bookchooks first catch and we are looking forward to reading it and then releasing it at a future date.
It was exciting to find the book as I was with friends from our bookclub and we had been talking about releasing a book from our club! I have finished it and really enjoyed the book. I also feel it is not just 'a novel of the plague' but addresses issues of any big epidemic scare - for example the SARS scare just last year.
I intend to pass the book around to other members of our club and then we will release it back into the wild!
Thanks!

I am another one of the bookchooks who found your book and have been passing it around. I have passed it on to a friend who is not in the bookclub and we have both enjoyed this book very much. I will pass it on to the next bookchook at our next meeting.

This is an excellent book -- gripping story, great characters and lovely writing. A friend brought it to me on her way from Australia to Ontario. I have read it (for the 2nd time) and plan to re-release it soon.
After forgetting it was on my shelf, I passed this on to my mother-in-law visiting from San Diego. She read it on the plane home, which sparked a spirited discussion about books with her seatmate and others around them! I introduced her to Bookcrossings, and hope she'll set it free as well.
My daughter-in-law gave me the book when I was visiting in Seattle. I live in San Diego, CA and will pass it on to a fellow booklover.
