Moist von Lipwig, Postmaster General, is somewhat bored. Since its successsful reanimation (in «Going Postal»), the post office is functioning so smoothly, there are no challenges anymore for a talented conman like Moist. Thus, one night he breaks into his own office, just for the kick.
So Lord Vetinari tries to assign him the Royal Bank and the Royal Mint. There is much amiss with the bank; it's said that there is corruption within the owner family and that the gold vaults are empty since long. The chairwoman Topsy Lavish holds 50% of the shares, her ugly dog Mr Fusspot 1%. She found a liking in Postmaster Lipwig, that is, Mr Fusspot liked Moist instantly, jumped on his lap and licked his face, which he never did with strangers, according to Ms Lavish.
When the old Ms Lavish dies, she bequests her shares to Mr Fusspot and Mr Fusspot to Moist von Lipwig. There is also a contract with the Assassins' Guild on Moist - if anything unnatural happens to the dog or if he does not do what her last will commands. So Mr Fusspot becomes the the new chairman of the bank and Moist is his legal representative.
There are golems involved, due Moist's fiancée Adora Belle Dearheart who works with the Golem Trust. Many golems, Adora unearthed a whole army. Moist sets some of them to work as mailmen, since golems are less likely to get attacked by thugs and dogs.
