In this touching children's book, Kate DiCamillo, master prose stylist, again spins a charming and engrossing tale. The subject is learning to love. About 100 years ago, 100 years after books specifically written for children began to form a genre, there was Margery William's THE VELVETEEN RABBIT, 1922, and Rachel Field's HITTY HER FIRST HUNDRED YEARS, winner of an early Newberry Award in 1930 and the story of the journeys of a porcelain doll. I couldn't help thinking of these books as I read Edward Tulane. A 100-year-old doll makes an appearance and Edward of course is a rabbit becoming real like Williams' rabbit. Though she makes a nod to these books of the past, DiCamillo manages an original version of the beloved toy genre with a message explicit to this book, which is about learning to love, however painful that may be. Now about 20-years-old, EDWARD TULANE won the 2006 Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for children's fiction and the Parent's Choice Award for Spring 2006 Fiction. Further, EDWARD TULANE was a Quill Awards finalist in the children's chapter book category. Based on its online poll, the U.S. Education Association named EDWARD TULANE one of the 2007 "Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children." In a 2012 survey by School Library Journal, EDWARD TULANE was ranked 59th among the all-time best children's novels. This adult enjoyed reading Edward Tulane last week. Its lesson of learning to love is eloquent and profound and reminded me of passages from my own life.
