Rakmen is a teenager who is having a difficult time. His baby sister died in his arms, his parents are on the verge of divorce, and he is flunking out of high school. He attends support group in the basement of Promise House. Then, he travels to Canada with Jacey, a ten-year-old member of his support group and her mom. He is to spend eight weeks in the wilderness with them canoeing and camping.
