A quick reread of Huck Finn and Jim's adventures / misadventures on the Mississippi as I get ready to read James by Percival Everett for book club.

I read this book back in high school. My high school teacher, Mr. Jerry Eggers, was regarded as a Huck Finn expert. I remember him telling us that he went to a Mark Twain festival in Hannibal to give a talk about the book. I wish I had access to what he lectured on.

Well, this was not an easy re-read for me. The book is rife with the "n-word," which is jarring and disconcerting. There are many shady characters in the book, as well as some well-meaning people. Themes include freedom, slavery, moral conflict, corruption of society, poverty, parental abuse, alcohol use disorder, and the natural world as a source of internal peace.) And while it was nice to see Huck evolve his world view on slavery and its horrible consequences, I'm not sure I would read this book again.

I'll leave this one unrated due to my mixed feelings.

Picked this up at a little library near me. I read it decades ago, want to reread alongside Percival Everett's "James."
