I got this UK-edition softcover from an online seller. It contains an assortment of classic horror tales, including some of my favorites:
A. M. Burrage's "Smee," a classic tale set in an English country house at Christmastime and featuring a game that goes... wrong.
A disturbing tale of hideous revenge on an unfaithful spouse, "The Case of Lady Sannox" by Arthur Conan Doyle - one of Doyle's grislier tales, too.
"Lucky's Grove" by H. Russel Wakefield: this one was new to me, and involves a family who fall foul of an ancient curse when someone harvests a tree from a grove said to be sacred to Loki to serve as the family Christmas tree.
M. R. James' "The Story of a Disappearance and an Appearance": This one's in the form of letters sent from one brother to another about his investigations into the Christmas-season disappearance of their uncle. He has odd dreams about a Punch-and-Judy show that turns sinister - even more sinister than the actual performance, which is saying something!
"Jerry Bundler" by W. W. Jacobs (best known for "The Monkey's Paw"): While this story isn't as chilling as that one, it has its own creepy charm - especially for those of us who hate practical jokes!
