Synopsis:
Late in the 18th century, Deborah Jannvier and her widowed mother live in a tiny cottage at the mercy of Deborah's callous uncle. One evening, a darkly handsome but gruff stranger arrives with a bizarre demand. He wants Deborah to accompany him that night by horse to Marymoor, an isolated manor on the edge of the Lancashire moors. Here Deborah's great-uncle Ralph is on his death-bed. On arrival, at the crumbling manor she is told she can inherit the estate on one condition: that she immediately marry Matthew!

Deborah understands if she will promise to do this all her worries for herself and her mother can be cast aside. However, Can she trust herself to this stranger who seems bearly a gentleman?

Desperate Deborah agrees. She and Matthew are surprised by the degree of affection that develops between them. But from the outset trouble is brewing for them in the form of Anthony Elkin. He's Ralph's only other relative and claims the estate rightly belongs to him. Elkin is ruthless, and willing to go as far as it takes to aquire the property - can the couple outwit him and find happiness?

Received from rainbow3 on her seasonal visit here. Noted the pass back to rainbow3 after reading so I think this will have to be read soon before I forget.

A fairly complex set of circumstances which rolled along at a fast pace but none the less enjoyable for that. Once again a modern interpretation of an older time but with some more 'of the age' situations arising throughout, however it did not stop me liking this easy read romance despite the fact that it was fairly obvious what was going to happen. I am leaving no more comment as I do not wish to give away any spoilers.

Suffice to say, I think you will like this one rainbow3. I did!

Wow, thanks Flutterbies9 ‐ didn't manage to complete reading this before it was time for me to leave Somerset after Christmas. So I am pleased it's arrived so swiftly and I can pick up from page 43...

An entertaining drama, the book cover synopsis gives enough to whet the appetite but happily there is even more 'story' to follow. Most romance elements are briskly dealt with as the unlikely couple are instantly plunged into acting as a plausible team in the face of hostilites from almost all sides. Thankfully both have strong personal supporters, in Matthew's case his man servant Jem, and in Deborah's case Matthew himself. Sensual lingering loving moments continue to be mainly absent from the page as Deborah and Matthew's marriage proceeds without a traditional courtship but yet by the books end the couple have formed strong loving bond. Just the business to take my mind off the frantic stormy wind whooshing down the city streets and tearing down trees nearby.
