I got this hardcover from local independent bookstore Balin Books.

In a not-that-distant future, global warming has caused glaciers to melt and ocean levels to rise, flooding out coastal cities. That plus massive storms and plagues have decimated the human race. In flooded New York City, pockets of survivors do the best they can - some working together, others preying on their efforts. A small group of people have established their own little haven, called Amen, in the American Museum of Natural History, where they attempt to preserve as many of the exhibits as they can before they have to leave. We see all this through the eyes of young Nonie, whose parents and older sister are part of the Amen community. Nonie has the ability to sense water and heavy weather, but even she couldn’t detect the massive storm that overwhelmed Amen and forced everyone to flee - taking one of the exhibits, a birchbark canoe, up the Hudson River in hopes of finding a refuge inland at an old family farm.

The narrative shifts back and forth from Nonie’s real-time journaling of events to flashbacks describing how they first moved into the museum, and what became of several other members of the community whose fates have traumatized the survivors. There are notes on the challenges of coping with injuries and illnesses when no new medicines can be made or even scavenged; the perils of feral animals; and the threat of humankind, from the feral types who lie in wait for travelers to the apparently well-intentioned who run their own fiefs with an iron hand.

I enjoyed the story, in part for the perspective of scientists and archivists who still have hope that someday society will rebound enough for people to delve into the sunken museums and retrieve scraps of former history. I also liked the setting: I have family in the area, so when the little band makes their way up the Hudson past several familiar landmarks - including Storm King mountain and Bannerman Castle - I felt as if I were there.

There are challenges for the little band, and some tragedies - but just perhaps they’ll find friends along the way, and might even make it to a place where they can settle in safety…
