Bought as part of a 'The Works' deal and the first in the Brackerley Prison series from an author I have read much of before.

Cover.
"1969. A job in the Prison Service is not for everyone. The training is hard, the cells are bleak and a thick skin is needed. But for Nell Lewis, helping prisoners is something she cares about deeply and when she's promoted into a new post as governor of HMP Brackerley in Yorkshire, she's tasked with transforming the renowned run-down facility into a modern, open prison for women.
Just as Nell is settling down into her new role, events take a dark turn when a man's body is discovered in the prison grounds. The mystery deepens still when one of their female inmates goes missing, ensuing a search across the country.
Can Nell resolve the sinister happenings at HMP Brackerley. before anyone else is put in danger?"
I have been a fan of Frances Brody's Kate Shackleton series so knew what to expect from this author and wanted to see how her new series would work out.
Very well as it happens. The prison setting makes a change and appears to be full of well researched detail - but not a scenario I am at all familiar with, the strong female lead is a given, the murder mystery is a bit of a slow burner but neatly resolved in the end. This book seemed to me to be a good start to a new series with obviously more to come as the characters are more deeply explored. I will see if I can read book 2 when it comes within my reach.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
This was read in October 2022 and I have yet to get a copy of the 2nd book in the series (Six Motives for Murder) but who knows? Time to pass this one on its travels.

Thanks Flutterbies9 this passed from your hands to mine over our super festive Season adventures together in Somerset. Heaving TBR book piles in my library so it may be a while before I get round to this.
Unusual setting indeed, sure caught my attention so I'm looking forward to it.
