Great retelling. Reminds me of reading the books of Mary Renault when I was a girl. I'd check one out of the school library to read, and also read another one during study hall, curled up in the school library stacks, after I'd gotten my work done.

This book may or may not still be traveling. I passed by the spot where I released it ( on a book exchange shelf) and a copy was there, minus the cover. A sad situation to find.
