In 1937 Shanghai, twenty-one-year-old Pearl Chin and her younger sister, May are living happy lives until their father informs them that he has gambled away their wealth and to repay his debts, he must sell his daughters to suitors who have traveled to Shanghai from Los Angeles to find Chinese brides. As Japanese bombs fall on Shanghai, Pearl and May sail from China to America and begin new lives.
