I really enjoyed the first book in this series, the Stoning, but felt this one dragged out a bit. It was interesting, but not quite as good as the first one. This book takes place in northern Greece, in the Prespes region, on the border with Albania and North Macedonia. Manolis is on holiday, after being forced to take leave as he is suffering from PTSD after his last case took a turn for the worse. He learns of the disappearance of his old friend Lefty, an “invisible”, a person with no papers, who lives off the grid. Manolis delves into the complex relationships of the village where Lefty lived where grudges run deep.

An interesting second instalment. There is a lot of information about Northern Greece, its inhabitants and its neighbours which, as a European by birth and heart, I was totally absorbed in. George Manolis is becoming more fleshed out as a main character and he comes across as very human and likable. The last part of story, however, sees many turns and twists, some of them more believable than others. It was still a pretty good read, well written, and I'll read the next instalment soon!

An interesting novel with the action in rural Greece. Filled with cultural insights, a simple yet effective central missing person mystery and a series of gut-wrenching final act twists. An enjoyable read.

Planned Release in 13 hrs (12/10/2024 10:00 PM UTC) at Livingstone Community Centre Street Library in Ivanhoe, Victoria Australia
