Beautiful story of a young girl Ada growing up in North London whose father is grieving of the loss of her mother. Ada's parents have never told her much about their past life in Cyprus. The arrival of her mother's sister Meryem in London will open up a raft of emotions for both Ada and her father as her mother and father's love story as two young teenagers in Cyprus is retold.

I knew nothing about the the history of Cyprus before reading this book and I think Elif Shafak does a wonder job of weaving the history of the civil war in Cyprus in the 1970s with the story of young Turkish girl and a Greek boy whose love for each other is forbidden in the political climate.

I really struggled to get into this book, I was over a hundred pages in before I started to enjoy it. The writing is beautiful and poignant, and so evocative. The author describes the love between Defne, a Turkish girl, and Kostas a young Greek man on the island of Cyprus. She writes of their forbidden love amidst the turmoil of a civil war. Kostas moves to England and wonders if he will ever see Defne again, but he returns to Cyprus 20 years later and they reconnect and eventually marry, live in England and have a daughter. A beautiful love story, but a sad story of how war impacts on people’s lives.

Elif Shafak writes with imagination, originality, and lyricism, not to mention magical realism, of the people and natural environment of Cyprus. This island has a turbulent history and this story is a compassionate account of its tragic past. It encompasses the affect that war, partition, division, religion, and migration has had on its community.
