An old fashioned detective novel based in Second World War in London. Chief Inspector Robert Macdonald of Scotland Yard is investigating the murder of a man in Regents Park. The main witness is a young chemist who was sitting on a park bench. Macdonald has a range I’d suspects including the people renting rooms in the same house as the victim, many of them working in the theatre, the doctor who as walking his dog in the park, the man hiding under the bridge where the victim was killed. You do not discover who the murderer is almost until the end. A cleverly crafted plot, with interesting characters, and the main character, Macdonald is very likable. An enjoyable read.
