Really enjoyed this...captures well the ambiguities of relationships while minutely dissecting human nature.

It certainly is worth while going to BX Meetups - you never know what you might pick up! I love Anne Tyler (though I think the most recent book was a bit feeble) and I have actually listened to this book as an audio tape while driving to Melbourne. I am looking forward to reading it properly, and in particularly to renewing my acquaintance with that zany dog trainer.
I just loved reading this gentle story again. The death of the boy is sensitively handled, and I adored Macon's housekeeping arrangements (however do you pronounce Macon? MayKon? Mason? Someone seemed to say "Maaycon" but in any case it is quite a hard name to come to grips with). I am quite sad to release it into the wild again, but I hope a few more people will enjoy it before it disintegrates. The spine is in a fairly poor condition, cracking and with pages popping wide open, so I don't think this copy will last much longer. A pity, because it is a superbly written story, though then ending does not live up to the promise of the beginning.
