The editor apprises that Dryden is not for readers in search of the exquisite, but for strong appetites and active minds. Throughout a career that begins and ends with commemorations and addresses, Dryden is always speaking to someone, almost never to himself, or when he pretends to in occasional lyric flights, the result is usually unbearable. Translation is Dryden's special art, his translations from the Roman Poets are in the best sense "parodies," experiments in accentuating the manner of the poet he is rendering according to Brower. He writes in his Introduction that The Fables, his last great collection of verse are final proof of Dryden's easy absorption of what he read and of his gift for re-expressing it in his own way.
