What the heck happened to this once great author? Very disappointed in this book, to say the least. Would have been a 7- but I found her slant on the Vietnam war informative.

I read this book for a book club. I enjoyed Part One for most of the reasons already posted by others. Part Two was very disappointing. Everything in it until Frankie is admitted for impatient care reads as if written for a bad soap opera. Maybe the author was forced to add all of this stuff by her editor. And the ending is completely unrealistic—another soap opera ending.
I served in the US Army stateside as a lieutenant from 1966-1968 and had many friends from high school and college who served in Vietnam so I am familiar with the time period covered in the book. I encourage you to Google 44th Medical Brigade and read about its history especially during 1967, 1968 and 1969. You will learn what it takes to support the medical needs of soldiers and related personnel during service in Vietnam. The two evac hospitals Frankie served at are part of this brigade.
