The year Summer is 12, it's a bad luck year for her family. She gets malaria. Her parents go to Japan, leaving Summer & her younger brother Jaz with their grandparents. Jaz seems to have become invisible to most people. And Obaachan's back starts acting up, just before harvest season, when she works as a cook while Jiichan drives a combine.
