Paperback from the Friends of the Library.

Hero is a retired search-and-rescue dog who was previously twelve-year-old Ben's father's K9 partner. While out and about in their hometown of Gulfport, Mississippi, Ben & Hero discover a puppy who appears to have been abused.

Author Jennifer Li Shotz is a Los Angeles native. Nothing in the story is specifically related to the Asian diaspora, but here's an article she wrote about her Chinese grandmother's life in the Mississippi Delta.

Asian bookbox; When police dog Hero is retired, he is placed with his handler's family, with teen Ben taking primary responsibility. Ben and Hero find a stray puppy that they find out is part of a dog fighting ring. Hero's police skills are a bit much, but all turns out well in the end.

Received today, and will be put in the stack of books I'll be taking to the Kensington (MD) Day of the Book Festival at the end of April. Thank you so much NancyNova and a big wave to hyphen8 all the way across the country and then another 2,471 miles. This is one well travelled book!
I hope to be able to give it a quick read in the next month. The description somehow brought to mind a book I loved as a child called Follow My Leader about a boy who lost his sight due when a firecracker went off in his face, and he was assigned Leader, a"seeing eye dog" to help him adjust. Very different stories, but still, I'm glad to be reminded of a childhood favorite and have the chance to read an share a book new to me.

Today’s quiet afternoon was the perfect opportunity to enter into the world oh Hero, Scout, and the humans (good ones and cruel ones) who surround them. It’s also a story of many levels of friendship and responsibility.
Tucking this safely away until the Trip to Kensington. Thanks again for sending.
