if you were born yesterday or just arrived from Mars, Jupiter or any planet outside our own, this book might give you (a very superficial) glimpse of what give purpose to the life of a human being. If that's not your case, be aware this book cannot do more than just ignore that: not out of an instigating Socratic ignorance, but simply because it was written to embrace superficiality at all costs. It preaches Philosophy, but it sells mysticism.

There are not many characters here (four of them, if you will) and they are as flat and predictable as most self-helf books can be. Basically there's the (childlike) main character looking for a purpose in life and the (motherlike and fatherlike) bar employees/owners, who will lead him the way to an incredibly banal quest in search of a meaningful life. Their interactions are portrayed as dialogues. (Spoiler: they are monologues for the most part, because the characters are not complex enough to really interact to one another).

My favorite part is when the main character is confronted with the most important question of this book: "what are you doing here?". It takes him a long time and a lot of sweat to realize that "here" doesn't refer to the coffee place, but to his place in his life (wow!). And he really gets overwhelmed (and exhausted) every time he is challenged to reflect on his own life for more than 5 seconds. And that's kind of how this book simulates a deep dive in relevant issues: by displaying how difficult, challenging but also enriching these reflections are, distracting the reader from the fact, that there's never much reflection going on here. But maybe that's what you're looking forward to? Some comfort, a warm hug and a pat on the back? In this case: go for it and ignore this review! :)
