I got this softcover at local independent bookstore Balin Books. It's a gay coming-of-age tale in graphic-novel form, centering on Jonah, who's in 9th grade as the story begins. (It follows him through his high school years.) He's a history buff and a pop-culture nerd, crafting miniature figures to illustrate a class presentation and delighting in sharing his favorite films with a like-minded girl. (The films and books mentioned are all slightly tweaked, as in the "Rings of the Lords" movie - favorite character "Danwise".) As the story opens, Jonah has fallen for Elliot, the cute shortstop on the school baseball team, who seems to like him as well - so what's a timid teen to do? Join the baseball team, of course. (Um....)

Since Jonah has no experience with team sports at all, he's pretty awful in the beginning, but the coach gives him some training and he eventually turns into a pretty good player. But there's teasing from the jocks on the team, and the one girl who's joined the team is never put into the games despite having a solid history as a ballplayer, so even the pretty-decent Coach has some things to learn.

The story does convey the awkwardness, fear of becoming the butt of school-wide jokes and/or name-calling, and the uncertainty of a teen who's pretty sure he's gay but isn't ready to come out yet. There are some painful sequences, and yet overall Jonah does learn - slowly - how to relate to friends and how to cope with being who he is. Will he ever admit his feelings to Elliot? What about the cute guy in French class who really, really likes Jonah? Well... the story's inspired by the author's own life, and things don't always work out in real life the way they do in the movies - but, overall, the story ends on an upbeat note.
