The Devil in the White City

I read another copy of this book in 2005. This is what I wrote after I read it:
This is the story, taking place over 100 years ago, of the planning, creating and staging of the World’s Fair in Chicago and of the serial killer, Dr. H. H. Holmes, who is wiping out people in the same geographical area at the same time. Rich with historical data, the book is at times slow, but always has an underlying current of fascinating facts and data, whether it be the idea of a Ferris wheel higher than the Empire State Building or the theory of how a lady’s footprint became embedded in Holmes’ door. This is certainly not a fast or easy read, but one which is very satisfying with its contents of love, history, engineering, catastrophe, marvels, and death. You might spend a little more time on this book than you would on an easy novel, but your time will be well spent in the throes of this very talented non-fiction author.
