I got this softcover from an online seller, attracted by the cover-art and the concept: in a devastated, post-apocalyptic world, humans are extinct and the population consists of robots - most of them linked to the "One World Intelligence," but some have chosen to remain independent. Protagonist Brittle was a "caregiver" model, designed to bond to and look after a person; now that Brittle's person is gone, along with all the others, it opts to roam the "Sea of Rust," a desert area full of the shattered, disintegrating ruins of human society. It's also where wrecked robots might be found, and Brittle has become a scavenger, hunting for robots or fragments that might contain components Brittle can use to maintain its own existence.

I really wanted to like this one, but somehow it just wasn't grabbing me. Oh, it's plenty atmospheric, and there are hints as to some of the things Brittle has seen (and been involved in) that might lead to dramatic, painful revelations down the line. But I wasn't motivated to keep going, so I'll pass this along. If a future finder adds a rave review, maybe I'll hunt up another copy and give the book another try!
