This book was shortlisted for the 1999 Booker Prize. I read Desai's "Clear Light of Day" a few years ago, and it was really good. This is another novel set in modern day India, where the old world clashes with the new world. Two daughters named Aruna and Uma live at home, and the youngest sibling, a son named Arun is going to school in America. He boards with the Patton family, and finds the freedom,
"the freezers" and so many other aspects of American life bewildering.

What a great book. I can’t wait to read more Anita Desai novels. This book is so engaging, you feel sometimes like you’re on that porch swing with MamaPapa and you root for poor Uma who has such a hard time straddling Old India ways with modern times. With this novel, you start off being immersed in Indian family ways, then you see American culture through the eyes of a South Asian student living in Massachusetts. I finished this book on the plane over to Finland so it can join the book buffet at the 2024 Bookcrossing convention.
