The cover text reads:

In 1939, five-year-old Jacques Austerlitz is sent to England on a Kindertransport and placed with foster parents. This childless couple promptly erase from the boy all knowledge of his identity and he grows up ignorant of his past. Later in life, after a career as an architectural historian, Austerlitz — having avoided all clues that might point to his origin — finds the past returning to haunt him and he is forced to explore what happened fifty years before.

This is #963 on the list.

An account of Austerlitz's early life in the UK and his later search for evidence of his previous family, set out in double spaced text, with no paragraphs and no direct speech, interspersed with grainy black and white photographs that are loosely related to the current text. In some parts the narrative is rambling and lacks focus as Austerlitz struggles with what happened to those deported by the Nazis, and in other parts it details the minutiae of what happened.
