7/24/02: Began reading this book today. Saw the author in interview with Charlie Rose. He, Mr. Stephen L. Carter, was a very interesting chap. He is a Professor of Law at Yale Univ. Already the author of seven non-fiction, acclaimed books, this is his first offering in the fiction arena.
The gist of the tale...there is a secret that has gone to the grave with the death of a prominant Black Am. judge. His son must now head the family and work the mystery.
Already, just 83 pages into the story, the characters are interesting and the mystery is tantilizing. I welcome the chance to read a good story that involves the upper class of Black Am. society. A group of persons, about whom, I know next to nothing.

7/31/02...I'm reading this book during lunch breaks, if for no other reason than to savor the reading of it over a longer time period. It intrigues and entertains...the personalities of the characters continue to be complex and complete. No thumbnail sketches for this author. The mystery is beginning to be unraveled by the leading character, Misha. This mystery surrounds the life and actions of his recentley deceased father . This father had been nominated, at one time in his life, by the President of the U.S. for a position as a Federal Justice. The nomination did not survive the congressional inquiries. All part of the mystery to be solved.

I did enjoy reading this book, even though it took me quite a time to finish it.
It was filled with mystery and intrique and interesting family troubles. I am still wondering how Misha finally put it all together.
It is really a book that makes you think about it long after that last page.
I am finally passing this book on to the receptionist here at the hospital who has been chomping at the bit to get it....
