Robert Goddard is one of my favourite authors. He writes mysteries with great characters and great plots. This is one is about an architect who becomes involved with the family who commissioned his first important building. Twelve years later he reads that the one of its occupants has been charged with murder by poisoning and her daughter comes and asks him for help so he returns to the house and it's dark secrets.

It's a page turner!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As you say the characterisation of the main character is great - and although some of the minor characters appear to be extreme caricatures, this could be due to the way the main character sees them. The book opens at the last scene, which could be annoying, were it not left ambiguous enough to be read two ways at the start, and at least six ways as you continue with the book! I think it would make a great serial; the only way I could be sure that a particular scene was not going to be the denouement was because of the number of pages still remaining!
