Donna Tartt's great gift as a writer is her magnificent talent for description. Her evocation of life at a small private university in New England with its oddball mix of ivory-tower intellectuals and scatterbrained cokeheads is rich in detail, both shocking and funny. If it's not entirely realistic however that only serves to add to the magnetism of this captivating story.
