Squeaky asked me to rehome some books for her and I spotted this one in the stack. It looked kinda quirky and offbeat and the reading theme for August is Fantasy, so I figured I would check it out. Currently 2 chapters in and getting a real kick out of it.

Amusing fluff -- good enough that I marked out the other two books in the trilogy as want to read, although I think that I can live with the way it ended if I never come across them. The Genreland theme for August is fantasy and a friend was giving this book away and it looked like amusing fluff. Plus there was a cat on the cover -- which was not a lie, since Austin the cat is a very important part of the book. He, along with his human companion, is dispatched to a run-down guest house in Ontario to take a turn guarding the portal to hell until they can figure out how to seal it up. Claire, the Keeper, is torn between the gorgeous, slightly too-young, incredibly pure jack-of-all-trades who helps run the guest house and Jacques the very dead French Canadian demi-pirate who haunts the place and has designs on her body even though he lacks one of his own. Then there's the Ancient Olympians who come to stay while passing through town, a voluptuous musician who prefers the bedroom with no windows to let in sunlight and no mirrors, and the twins who may or may not have arrived during a full moon. Hell has a personality and Halloween is an adventure and in the end all Hell does not break loose, but it sure does come close.
