This young adult book, only 200 pages, recounts the story of a family whose father worked for the United Fruit Company in South America. Upon deciding to return to the United States in 1942, intending to enlist in the military, they boarded a United Fruit Company merchant ship. They were four of the six civilians on board: father, mother, 11-year-old daughter, and eight-year-old son. Unbeknownst to them, Nazi submarines were patrolling in the Gulf of Mexico and sinking as many ships as possible with torpedoes without regard to whether their targets were military or civilian.
