1995 Scribner trade paperback of the 1925 classic tale of the Roaring Twenties love story. This is the authorized text, correcting all the errors which appeared earlier, even in the rushed first edition. I read this as a library loan way back, but I decided to give it a re-read when I found this copy yesterday in the Maybelle Little Free Library.
I can let this go after I read:
1920 The Cut-Glass Bowl (short story) [read 2014]
1922 The Beautiful and Damned [read 2024]
1922 The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Other Jazz Age Tales (collection) [read 2014]
Edit August 20, 2023: I greatly enjoyed re-reading this, and I got much more out of the story this time. The writing style is beautiful, but at times it requires a bit of care to figure out what is going on. There were also some surprising things here, and somebody recently commented that Gatsby is a simp for Daisy, which I totally get now! The fascinating contemporary time period of both its writing and setting probably explains much of its later appeal, although it was a bit of a bomb by its second printing, which did not sell, despite the author's earlier popular success. The characters are all very intriguing, even the minor ones who just float into the story briefly and then back out. Even the setting of Long Island comes across as somewhat of a character here. There are lots of interesting essays included in this edition, all about the making and reception of this small book over time. Some contemporary critics even trashed it way back then. It's a short read. I currently have this ranked at #184 on my ranked list of best-read books lately.
