This book was very deep. It took me a while to get into, but once I did it was hard to put down. Set in the early 1930's it was full of relationship issues among many different types of people struggling to make ends meet during difficult times.

I was delighted to find this book on a shelf labeled "free books" after perusing a number of used book ads on the walls in the student area of Wake Tech. I had recently learned about what sea glass is when I read a book called "The Keeper's Son," by Homer Hickham. Interestingly, it, too, was set at a beach during an earlier era of American history. (BTW, it's a fabulous read, as all his books are!) And, as if that wasn't enough, I'd been to the beach just before finding this book, and had found 5 pieces of sea glass! It was meant for me to read! Additionally, I happen to weave, so the serendipitous find of this book still gives me great joy!
The book started slow for me, but I had been reading other authors whose styles are fast-paced and I had to down-shift to get comfortable with it. It's a good read. I never knew about the strikes up in the mills and all that about the great ship explosion. How awful! It's really a good blend of characters and how their lives intersect in that uncanny way only real life can. I haven't decided yet where I will set the book free, but I will definitely so do soon. Thanks for sharing!

What a surprise. Had lunch with a friend from Clayton, NC today. Received this to read & return to bookcrossing path. I probably will loan this book to another friend at work before I give it a try. I have too much on my plate right now and the friend is interested in this particular book.
